Miitomo is an application by Nintendo that combines messaging and social networking that intends to revolutionize how we communicate through avatars.

2016 will be remembered as the year Nintendo finally made its break into mobile gaming, on both Android and iPhone. First with Pokémon GO, the augmented reality game in which we had to run around the city to catch these creatures, and then with Super Mario Run, the first official game for mobile platforms featuring the emblematic plumber.

But months earlier, the Japanese company had tried its luck in the world of smartphones and tablets thanks to Miitomo's APK. It wasn't exactly a game, although it allowed us to play it, but rather an application that brings together messaging and social networks to encourage communication among users.

But don't expect that talking to your friends and contacts will be as traditional and boring as on WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger or Telegram. Here, all communication takes place through your virtual avatar, a Mii that you can create in your own likeness or with the aspect and personality you've always wanted.

How does Miitomo work?

Using Miitomo on your Android (it's also available for iPhone and even Nintendo Switch) is as simple as downloading and installing the app from the Play Store. You can then configure your virtual Mii as if you were playing The Sims, defining your physical aspects and personality traits. Then you have to answer some personal questions so that everyone can get to know your tastes, in order to then immediately communicate with your friends.

• You can use your smartphone's camera to create your avatar.
• Talk to your friends using the send and receive message features.
• Dress up your Mii with its own style and decorate its room.
• Buy items and accessories for your character.
• Customize your favorite celebrity with the Sidekick Mii feature.
• Various communication channels such as the style channel and the response channel.
• Have fun mini-games like Miitomo Drop.
